We hear more and more often that sustainable companies will be the most profitable, but what does that really mean? How can an organization become sustainable? And above all, why should it do so?
Let’s start at the beginning. It was in 1987 that sustainable development was first discussed in the Brundtland Report. This document delved into the environmental impact of economic development and globalization—driven by industrialization and population growth—and began to explore possible solutions to mitigate the consequences.
Later, in 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) along with 169 targets under the name of the 2030 Agenda, making it a roadmap and a challenge for all of society and especially for businesses.
Until very recently, everything related to this aspect has been integrated into the CSR area in many organizations, and there appears to be a growing demand for it to be considered an active and relevant part of corporate strategy. According to the Spanish Global Compact Network, 80% of companies are committed to the 2030 Agenda, but only 24% of them have defined and established specific, measurable commitments.
It is therefore clear that the time has come for companies to make a real commitment and act as true agents of change, contributing to a more
sustainable, safe, and prosperous planet. As noted in the Deloitte report “2030 Purpose: Good Business and a Better Future”, recent major academic studies estimate that organizations committed to the 2030 Agenda have outperformed their competitors on the stock market by 11%.
