A few months ago, at IMEF's CFO of the Year awards, I heard an idea that has been going around in my head: to resignify the acronym CFO as "Chief Future Officer". I confess that at first I found the proposal a little unpleasant. It sounded like one of those trendy titles that try to make something "novel" that maybe has always been there.
For a long time, the finance role was primarily associated with controlling, measuring, and optimising resources. And although this evolution has been going on for years, the concept has made me think that perhaps we are entering a new stage.Artificial intelligence has changed the conversation. Many projections, analyses and KPIs that previously required hours of work, or that were simply not done due to complexity, can now be generated much faster.
Thus, when information ceases to be the limitation, the real differentiator is the criterion.
We have always known that the important thing is not to have more data, but to know what matters, how to interpret them and, above all, what questions to ask from them to turn that information into better decisions.Going from explaining what happened to imagining what could happen is a "game changer".
And perhaps that is the great opportunity of today's CFO: to move from analysing results to building scenarios. From managing resources to deciding what possibilities we want to create with them.
Because resources do not only finance operations.
They also make futures possible.
A company needs resources to invest in technology, transform processes, develop talent, enter new markets, respond to unexpected changes, and sustain strategic decisions when the environment becomes uncertain. And perhaps therein lies one of the greatest responsibilities of today's CFO: helping the organisation enable choice.
I leave you a question so that you can share with me what you think: Is the CFO really evolving into a Chief Future Officer, or is this name simply reminding us of a responsibility that is now more apparent?
